Malum Caedo

Sternguard Veteran 路 Ultramarines 路 Melee crowd control

Malum Caedo is the cleanest answer to the first question in Warhammer Survivors: what do I do when the screen fills with bodies? His Chainsword is immediate, wide and readable. This dossier covers the confirmed kit, the October demo route and the reported evolution without pretending the launch build is already solved.

Why start with Caedo

Caedo arrives from Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, but he does not bring his Boltgun into this fight. Auroch’s reveal describes him parking the rifle and entering the fray with a Chainsword, using horizontal serrated attacks to eviscerate multiple enemies in one swing. That description matters more than any tier label: the attack covers a line, so it rewards enemies that are already grouped.

The result is a champion who teaches the survivors loop without hiding it behind a resource meter or a delayed setup. You move, you let the arc meet the pack, and you learn when to turn. That makes him the safest recommendation for a first October demo run, and a strong candidate for the launch campaign if his unlock is not buried behind a long meta grind.

  • Confirmed starting weapon: Chainsword.
  • Confirmed attack shape: horizontal serrated strikes that hit several enemies.
  • Demo status: playable in the May and October demos.
  • Launch unlock: not announced at the time of this check.

Confirmed kit and the evolution file

The official material is precise about the Chainsword and quiet about the rest. Community reports from the October demo place a Tape Measure companion in the same evolution line and name the Eviscerator Chainsword as the result. That route is useful for planning, but it is not developer-confirmed. Treat the pairing as a lead to test on launch, not a promise.

The current demo reports also describe maxing a weapon and opening a boss chest as the likely trigger for several evolution lines. The exact level requirement and the chest rules are not published. If the Eviscerator does not appear in your first run, check that both items are held and that you are opening the right chest before assuming the recipe is wrong.

Evidence level: Chainsword is official. Tape Measure → Eviscerator Chainsword is a community report from the October demo. The launch recipe may change.

How to play the Chainsword

Fight in arcs, not circles around a single target. The Chainsword’s value comes from intersecting a line of approaching enemies, so let the horde come to you and turn only after the swing has done its work. A wide turn keeps the next group inside the attack; a sharp reversal puts your back into the next wave.

Collect experience along the outside of the pack. Caedo has no built-in escape tool in the confirmed kit, so the safest pickup route is the one that does not cross the centre of the screen. If a rescue objective or elite chest sits inside a dense ring, clear a wedge first rather than diving straight at the marker.

  • Keep the pack in front of the swing; do not chase stragglers behind you.
  • Use the arena edge as a wall, then sweep along it rather than getting pinned into it.
  • Take movement speed before a second damage stat when the screen starts closing.
  • Hold one defensive upgrade for the first elite wave if your health is already dipping.

Build priorities for the demo

The first slots should make the Chainsword’s existing job better: area, damage and attack frequency. A wider arc and a faster cycle turn the weapon into a moving wall. Movement speed is the support stat because Caedo’s survival comes from keeping the pack at the edge of the swing, not from standing in it.

If you find the reported Tape Measure, decide early whether you are committing to the Eviscerator route. Splitting upgrades between that line and a second unrelated weapon leaves both half-finished. The Chain Vanguard build turns this into a concrete checklist.

Do not treat a community recipe as a guaranteed power spike. Commit only after the weapon and companion are both in the run.

Matchups and demo notes

Against Tyranids, the Chainsword’s line clears the lesser brood but does not solve a Synapse creature on its own. Push toward the Hive Tyrant or another Synapse source when the swarm is thick; killing it stuns the surrounding bioforms and gives the arc room to work. Against Skaven, keep moving through the open ground and avoid letting a Vermintide line cross behind you.

The October demo’s rescue objectives are the best place to practise the champion’s limits. A ring of enemies around a survivor is not a damage check; it is a positioning test. Clear one side, enter, then leave along the same wedge. If you lose the route, the Chainsword will not create one for you.

Pre-launch note. This dossier is based on official reveals and the October 2026 demo. Unlock routes, exact damage values and final balance may change before 10 November 2026. Check the update log for newer information.

Editorial method

Official claims, press observations and community reports are kept separate. Where Auroch has not published a value, this guide says so instead of filling the gap.
