The Legend of Catachan

One Man Army 路 Catachan Jungle Fighters 路 Mobile skirmisher

The Legend of Catachan is the October demo’s hit-and-run specialist: extra movement, a grenade-first kit and a reported poisoned sidearm. He asks for a different rhythm from the melee starters, but rewards players who like to choose their ground.

Why play Catachan

Auroch describes the Legend as a “One Man Army” trained in guerrilla and hit-and-run tactics. He moves faster than other Survivors and enters combat armed exclusively with Frag Grenades. Other weapons, including a modified Ripper Pistol, open up through play.

That speed is not just a convenience stat. It lets him throw a grenade, turn the pack into the blast, and leave before the return pressure arrives. If Caedo teaches the straight line and Neave teaches the circle, Catachan teaches the feint.

  • Confirmed starting weapon: Frag Grenade.
  • Confirmed movement: faster than other Survivors.
  • Reported evolution: Ripper Pistol from Frag Grenade + Bandolier.
  • Demo status: new playable champion in the October demo; rescue objective.

The Catachan rescue

The October demo rescue is guarded by Tyranid Warriors using Synapse, according to IGN’s hands-on. That means the encounter is not only a damage check; it is a priority-target check. Break the Warriors first, then use the disruption to reach the objective.

If the fight is going badly, leave. Catachan’s speed is the point. Re-enter from a different angle, throw into the new clump and use the extra movement to keep the rescue ring from becoming a coffin. The full-game unlock is still unannounced.

Grenade rhythm

Throw ahead of the chase. A grenade dropped at your feet damages the enemies already touching you, but it does not shape the next group. The better throw lands where the pack is about to be, giving the blast time to arm while you keep the line moving.

Use the extra speed to cross open ground, not to run in a straight line forever. Sharp turns are safe when you have a gap; long straight escapes let the horde compress behind you. Curve through pickups, then turn back toward the densest group once the grenade is ready.

  • Lead the pack into the blast; do not wait for it to reach you.
  • Use the demo’s extra speed to reposition around rescue rings.
  • Keep one defensive layer for boss fights, where raw movement is not enough.

Build direction

The Grenadier Hit-and-Run build prioritises Frag Grenade area and damage, then Bandolier for the reported Ripper Pistol line. One player report says Bandolier must be maxed and that the grenade is not replaced; the pistol is added. That is a strong outcome if true, but it is still community evidence.

Do not neglect a recovery or health upgrade. Catachan’s speed prevents many hits, not all of them. A single defensive slot turns a failed dodge into a lesson instead of a run-ending mistake.

Matchups

Against Skaven, the grenade’s delayed area is excellent against a Vermintide line if you throw across its path rather than along it. Rat Ogors need a committed blast or a clean escape; do not let Warp Fury turn a slow kill into a chase.

Against Tyranids, use the Warriors as the landmark. Clear the escorts with a grenade, then move through the gap toward the Synapse source. Against Orks, the Waaagh! wave is the moment to lead the pack through a narrow gap rather than trying to outrun it in open ground.
